Our loft conversion process


Our 10 step loft conversion process detailed below, illustrates how easy it is to convert your loft.

Our process goes all the way from your initial enquiry through to loft conversion completion, you can see we really are the one stop shop for quality loft conversions in Chiswick and the London area.

The 10 Stages


1. Telephone Consultation

Ash Island loft conversions believe in you, our valued client, making informed decisions; decisions based on having all the facts. We offer a free telephone consultation, where you can get no waffle advice on feasibility, costs and planning issues.

Call us on 0208 166 5145 or fill in our contact form so we can drop you a line at a convenient time (evenings or weekends are no problem).

Time = as long as you like but 5–10 mins should cover most things off


2. Design and Quotation

Call in an Ash Island loft conversion designer – this is likely to be Lloyd or Matt.

They will answer any questions you may have and work with you to turn ideas into concept plans. Following the meeting concept sketches will be offered along with a no obligation fixed priced quotation.

Time = 30 mins to 1 hour is normally sufficient (onsite) then 48hrs thereafter for concept sketches and quotation


3. Measured Survey

Upon acceptance of Ash Island Lofts fixed priced quotation a detailed measured site survey follows – this is where accurate measurements are taken; these are needed to produce working drawings.

Time = 1 to 2 hours is normally required


4. Detailed Working Drawings

We convert your site survey measurements into an architectural drawing detailing all the requirements of your conversion; it takes about a week to produce these plans. They are completed using the latest version of AutoCad, in order to ensure accuracy.

We will then discuss the plans and any client preference changes that may be possible; again this is done at a time convenient to you. This can be repeated as many times as you wish to make sure your plans are exactly how you would like them.

Once you are happy, we supply you with a complete set of plans along with a specification for building control. We submit the plans for you along with all the relevant paperwork, including Ordnance Survey Maps, to your Local Planning Authority.

Time = Our aim is this part of the process takes 1 week (No more than 2 weeks if client preference changes are required)


5. The Law

Most loft conversion can be carried out under Permitted Development – here is a mini guide.

If Planning Permission / Certificate of Lawful Development is required we take care of it without charge.

Time = Most Councils look to make a decision between 5-8 weeks, from receipt of application

N.B. We will also supply a Party Wall agreement letter if required


6. Building Regulations

We use a specialist building control agency, to inspect and certify your building works, in order to ensure FULL compliance with building regulations.

Or, if you prefer, we will happily deal with your local authority.


7. The Build

Once all approvals are in place now comes the build and this is likely to take 8 to 12 weeks.

Time = 8-12 weeks

N.B. Whilst quality always supersedes, we will also look to adhere to 'time is of the essence', if required; to be discussed on a job by job basis! Maybe the best of both worlds, Dear Client.


8. Completion

Your new loft room(s) will be complete and ready for you to start decorating, to be followed by your carpet fitters. If Ash Island are to take care of these works then allow a further week or two.

Time = 1-2 weeks
